The World Food Prize – A 25 Year History of Addressing Food Security

This is the first in a series of blog posts leading up to this year’s 25th Anniversary of The World Food Prize in Des Moines, Iowa where GHI will release the 2nd Annual Global Agricultural Productivity Report™ at its signature event on October 12. (RSVP Here)

Dr. Norman E. Borlaug, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 for his work in global agriculture, began working in Mexico in 1944 as a research scientist in charge of wheat production. His work profoundly impacted agricultural production, first in Mexico and later in many parts of the world, sparking what today is known as the “Green Revolution”.

In 1986, Borlaug founded The World Food Prize to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to improving the quality, quantity or availability of food throughout the world. In 1990, John Ruan, a Des Moines businessman and philanthropist, assumed sponsorship of The Prize and established The World Food Prize Foundation.

2011 will mark The World Food Prize’s 25th Anniversary. This year’s Borlaug Dialogue International Symposium will focus on The Next Generation: Confronting the Hunger Challenges of Tomorrow. The dialogue will address key questions in the fight against hunger and poverty through presentations and “conversation” sessions that will feature government leaders, policymakers, CEOs and executives from agricultural-related businesses and NGOs, scientific and academic experts, development leaders and young leaders from around the world.

As a part of this year’s World Food Prize events on October 12, the Global Harvest Initiative will release the 2nd Annual Global Agricultural Productivity Report™ on October 12. The GAP Report™ features the latest comparison of global agricultural productivity with the rate required to sustainably meet the future agricultural needs of the estimated nine billion people expected to inhabit the Earth by 2050 and four national-level case studies which highlight the impact of key policies on agricultural productivity.

The Global Harvest Initiative is proud to be a part of The World Food Prize in celebrating 25 years of inspiring, educating and developing the next generation of leaders to address the critical issue of agricultural productivity and food security around the globe.
