World Population Day – How Growth Affects Sustainability
July 11 marks the 24th annual recognition of World Population Day. Introduced by the United Nations in 1989 to raise public awareness for global population issues, World Population Day highlights the need for sustainability to maintain the well-being of our global inhabitants.
The United Nations’ World Population Prospects analysis now forecasts the global population will reach 9.6 billion by 2050 and 11 billion by 2100.
World Population Day should continue to highlight the challenge of our growing and changing population and draw attention to the need to conserve natural resources while increasing food security through sustainable intensification in agriculture for future generations.
