Global Harvest Initiative Congratulates Dr. Daniel Hillel, 2012 World Food Prize Laureate
Dr. Daniel Hillel has been awarded the 2012 World Food Prize for conceiving and implementing a radically new mode of bringing water to crops in arid and dry land regions – known as “micro-irrigation.”
Dr. Hillel’s pioneering scientific work in Israel revolutionized food production, first in the Middle East, and then in other regions around the world over the past five decades. His work laid the foundation for maximizing efficient water usage in agriculture, increasing crop yields, and minimizing environmental degradation.
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, World Food Prize President and former Ambassador Kenneth M. Quinn, and Jonathan Shrier, the State Department’s Acting Special Representative for Global Food Security, spoke at today’s World Food Prize Laureate Ceremony held at the U.S. State Department in Washington, D.C. Secretary of State Clinton remarked: “Our newest laureate is a master of applying new thinking to old problems. In that sense, he truly is following in the footsteps of the founder of the World Food Prize, Dr. Norman Borlaug… the Green Revolution saved as many as a billion people from starvation. It is up to us to make sure we save the next billion.”
Ambassador Quinn highlighted Dr. Hillel’s efforts to work with people across borders to address food security. “Confronting hunger can bring diverse people together across even the broadest political, ethnic, religious or diplomatic differences,” said Quinn. “Dr. Hillel’s work and motivation has been to bridge such divisions and to promote peace and understanding in the Middle East by advancing a breakthrough achievement addressing a problem that so many countries share in common: water scarcity.”
Dr. Hillel will be officially awarded at The World Food Prize 25th Anniversary Laureate Award Ceremony on October 18, in Des Moines, Iowa. The World Food Prize was founded in 1986 by Dr. Norman E. Borlaug, recipient of the 1970 Nobel Peace Prize. Since then, The World Food Prize has honored outstanding individuals who have made vital contributions to improving the quality, quantity or availability of food throughout the world. The Prize recognizes achievement in a broad range of areas related to the world food supply — food and agriculture science and technology, manufacturing, marketing, nutrition, economics, poverty alleviation, political leadership and the social sciences.
The Global Harvest Initiative will release its 3rd annual GAP Report™ at the 2012 World Food Prize this October in Des Moines, Iowa.
