2011 World Food Prize Laureate – John Agyekum Kufuor

During his presidency from 2001 – 2009, John Agyekum Kufuor transformed Ghana by his relentless commitment to sustained growth in the agricultural sector. His policy reforms reduced Ghana’s poverty rate from 51.7 percent in 1991 to 26.5 percent in 2008; these reforms also reduced hunger from 34 percent in 1990 to 9 percent in 2004. Kufuor’s influence on the agricultural sector drove expansion in the national economy, with GDP quadrupling to 8.4 percent growth by 2008.

Kufuor structured his reforms around the principle that public and private sector initiatives are vital for long-term change.  He reactivated the Agricultural Extension Service, a program that paid special attention to educating farmers on best practices and focused on improving storage and transportation of the increased yields. In 2005, Kufuor launched the Ghana School Feeding Program to provide nutritious meals to more than 400,000 students in over 975 primary schools in Ghana. By the end of 2010, the program had reached approximately 1 million students.

Kufuor’s efforts led Ghana to reduce its hunger rate and the number of people living on less than a dollar per day by half, the first Sub-Saharan country to do so. To honor the multiple positive changes achieved during President Kufuor’s tenure, Kufuor was chosen as a co-recipient of the 2011 World Food Prize, along with Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, former president of Brazil.
