In Memory of Our Friend Bill Lesher, Founding Executive Director of the Global Harvest Initiative
This week the Global Harvest Initiative remembers our dear friend and founding executive director, William Gene “Bill” Lesher, who passed away on August 25, 2017, from complications related to multiple myeloma.
The board of directors, staff and friends of the Global Harvest Initiative pay tribute to Bill and his constant devotion to his family, friends and country. We also keep his family and friends in our thoughts and prayers this week.
Bill was a delight to work with and be around, and was beloved by many. He took a special interest in the next generation of farmers and agricultural specialists. His gentle laugh and sparkling eyes were paired with a delightful sense of humor and a brilliant vision for how the U.S. could continually improve its systems of agriculture and food production, among other important issues of our day.
After serving in the U.S. Army, Bill received a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from Cornell University. He embarked on a long career in public service, including positions as Chief Economist of the U.S. Senate Committee for Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry and Assistant U.S. Secretary of Agriculture. He was Partner of the agriculture policy consulting firm Lesher & Russell Inc., where he was instrumental in shaping U.S. agriculture policy. He served as the founding executive director of the Global Harvest Initiative until he retired in March 2012.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday September 6, 2017 at 10:00am at Colonial Funeral Home, 201 Edwards Ferry Road NE, Leesburg, VA. Send condolences to www.colonialfuneralhome.com.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those wishing to remember Bill consider a contribution to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation in his name.
